Green-tech - a major supplier to new Leeds Skelton Lake M1 Services

Overview

A £60 million Leeds Skelton Lake Services on Junction 45 of the M1 has been completed during the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The innovative new service station includes a business centre, food and beverage outlets and landscaped areas.A visitor area with a lakeside viewing deck is still to be built.

Landscape Contractors Brambledown Landscapes Services were commissioned to undertake the soft landscaping of this huge project which had to tie in with the natural environment of the nearby Skelton Lake and Gardens. They turned to their long-term supplier Green-tech for the landscaping materials and sundries.

The Solution

Skelton Lakes Service Station in Leeds is unlike any other. It boasts a twisting living roof and many unique landscape features. Brambledown Landscapes Services were responsible for constructing natural landscaping throughout the 30-acre service station site.

They have a long-standing relationship with Green-tech and we supplied the majority of the landscaping materials which included over 200 tonnes of Green-tree topsoil, 150 tonnes of compost, 300m³ of bark Mulch, in excess of 7000 Tubex Shrub Shelters and all of the tree ancillaries, which included stakes, belting, blocks and irrigation for circa 500 newly planted trees.

For the trees planted into the hard-landscaped areas we supplied in the region of 100m² of the urban tree planting system ArborRaft, along with 100 tonnes of ArborRaft soil and subsoil. Used together, the system combines geo-cellular ArborRaft units which lock together within the tree pit and nutrient-rich ArborRaft soil. Combined they provide essential load bearing support and reduce soil compaction within the tree pit to enable healthy root growth.

The Outcome

Skelton Lake Services is open and has been very well received. It is considered a high quality "new concept" in Motorway Service Area design where visitors can take a break from their journey and relax whilst enjoying a beautifully-landscaped environment.

The ‘new concept’ is where its natural features (wildflower roof, tree-lined approach roads, access to the lake) are the building's main selling point, not forgetting the view of the lake. There is a wildlife and visitor centre here too.
