Richard Gill
Sales Director
What made you want to work in the landscaping industry?
I came into this industry by accident, my family have a very horsey back ground and I’m the black sheep of the family so I ended up trying a few different jobs, one which was working with horses in Canada for two year when I left school which was a great experience but I knew this wasn’t a career I wanted to pursue, then I work for a company in sales which offered broadband services to office blocks which I really enjoyed which made me think that a career in sales could work. My mother kept telling me to find a career in something and showed me an advertisement in the Yorkshire post which was for a Jnr sales position at Green tech, I applied and got an interview which was with Richard Kay, Alan Weymouth and Ian Rotherham which was very nerve racking as a 20 year old lad, I luckily got the job after a second interview and I have thankfully stayed in the industry the whole time.
What is your favorite memory at Green-tech?
Being asked to present the Principle Winner at the BALI Awards was a great memory for me!
What is your favourite landscaping show or event to attend or that you have attended?
I don’t have one, if I had to create a short list it would be the BALI Awards, Futurescape and Confor/APF, love to get our and meet our customers, we always try to enjoy ourselves when we’re out working/networking/socialising, feel it’s a vital part of Green tech and what makes us a personable company.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Spending time with family and friends, as mentioned my family are into harness racing which I also follow with my wife, this is a seasonal sport which keeps us busy in the Summer months. I also like a round of golf, walking our dog (Maeve) eating nice food is pretty high up on my list especially with good company and chilling in front of the TV.
What is your favourite project that Green-tech have been involved in?
I like the opposite ones to my customers, I find the projects which are challenging are the ones I get the most from. We had a project in South London years ago called Stretham Hub which was a 1100m3 of roof garden substrate in dumpy bags and a loads of drainage materials which were going into the tightest site I have ever seen, it was a logistical nightmare but I managed to work with our operations team, a really good flatbed haulier and one of my favorite customers and we managed to pull the job off with very little problems over a very short supply time frame. I always feel this is an accomplishment from everyone which gives me a great sense of achievement, it’s even better when you get to see the project when its complete and it looks amazing.
Who is the funniest person at Green-tech?
We have a few, its normally when we go away to a show, when we go for a Friday pint or at a work event when the true banter come out of various members, wouldn’t say there’s one and we potentially have quite a few funny members, we have to be thick skinned that’s all I’m saying.
